Earlier this week (I missed it while hanging with my kids in Kenya), Running Times published an essay I wrote about Samia, the runner from Somalia who drowned trying to get to Europe.

Her fellow Somali athlete, Mogadishu-born British champion Mo Farah, will inspire a generation of athletes. Samia’s life and death are a mere flickering blip in the sports world.

But to me, Samia is an inspiration.

I admire her because she ran with courage, and she pursued greatness with intensity. She is an inspiration to cheer for last place and to finish, unafraid, in last place.
