Today I am writing at Babble about the marriage retreat my husband and I never really took. One year for Christmas my parents gifted their four children with the ‘marriage retreat of their choice.’ For us in Djibouti, however, there was no marriage retreat in sight. They knew this and offered to send us a book or movies or something that could help us stir up valuable conversations and experiences about our relationship.

We said, “Thank you so much. But, um, can we wait a couple of years and take an actual marriage retreat when we are in the US next?” We knew we needed some time away together, the last time we had that was in 2002. They graciously said yes and so the next time we were in Minnesota, we took a much needed weekend away.

But we didn’t want to do a traditional marriage retreat. We designed our own. It was fabulous. We might have to consider doing this more than once a decade.
